Halfway Through October

I can't believe that we are half way through October already. Where has the time gone?

In Math, we are finishing up our graphing unit before switching to number operations. In the near future, I will be posting an entry on websites and resources to practice addition and subtraction facts.

For our spelling program, we have four spelling groups. The students will find out tomorrow (October 15th) what groups they are in. Each Monday the new spelling lists will be posted.

I am excited to share that we are starting our first project using Instagram. We will be posting photos of our community onto our class Instagram with #ourcommunityed. We have a few other classes planning on joining us to share what their communities look like. It should be an interesting experience to see photos from different communities in North America and hopefully around the world. Stay tuned to our Instagram account for our pictures.

That's all for now. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Buzzing in 3B

We've been busy in 3B. The students wrote their first few blogs. Please check them out at kidblog.org/msbettess and feel free to comment. We love getting comments on our blogs. Yesterday, we took our knowledge of bees and started creating bee books on the iPads. Hopefully we can share them soon.

In math, we have been reviewing and doing some assessments for the Grade 3 Provincial Assessment.
You can find out more about the provincial assessment here

Tomorrow and Thursday we have our Strong Beginnings test. This allows me to know what levels your child is at and how to best teach them.

We've started tweeting what we've learned as well as connecting with other students around Canada. You can check out our Tweets under @3BBees as we'd love to see 3B parents checking up on what we are learning. I have, also, started to post pictures of our work on Instagram with our account of 3BBees. Soon we will start using Instagram as a class to connect with classes around the world.

Have a great week!

Welcome to Grade 3 2013-2014

Hello,

Welcome to our 3B classroom website for the 2013-2014 school year. This website will be used to update parents on what we are doing in our classroom. I enjoy integrating technology into our lessons so we will connect with you and the world in many ways using our class netbooks and iPads. As you should have seen already in the letter I sent home, we will be using Twitter and Instagram in the classroom. A letter has always gone home explaining how we will use these social media tools in the classroom.

In math will be starting the year learning about various types of data collecting and reviewing adding and subtracting. In Language Arts will be learning about bees. 3B will be learning about what it means to be Canadian for our social studies unit.

I am looking forward to a good year in 3B!

Ms. Bettess

At the End :(

I can't believe we are going into our last week of school here in 3B. I have truly had an amazing year with this year's 3B group. We have done some awesome things with technology this year that have turned out creative students. I hope that the creativity that emerged this year in 3B will continue when the Bees start grade 4. We wrapped up this year learning about plants and soil as well as Vikings. I am looking forward to a fun filled last week of school. We've got a Viking morning, Fraction Sundae Party, Field Day, a 3B art book, and a pizza party with our Roots of Empathy family to get us through the week! It will be a fun but sad last week of school. I'd like to wish all of the students and parents of 3B students a great summer break.

Showing of Our Tech Skills

Today, I was running a Tech PD at Westwood while 3B had a substitute. I presented on blogging in the classroom and I had some students help me to present to some other teachers in our district. Our 3B bloggers were a hit. The teachers were impressed with all of the amazing blogs 3B have created and all of the connections we have made. They thought 3B learners were awesome. The presenters did an amazing job! Then in the afternoon some of the teachers in the PD came to watch us Skype with different classes (one was even from Venezuela). They were impressed with our connections and the students skills at back channeling (recording online what they learned). Way to go 3B!

The Busy Bees and Their Amazing Connections

3B loves connecting with and collaborating with other classes and this week we are starting a collaborative research project. I connected with a teacher on Twitter who teaches grade 4 in Alberta. They happened to be studying plants like we are so we decided to have our classes research different plant topics and share their information in a google document. They will then work with their partner (through the Internet) to create a presentation to share with their classmates. All of the creating of the project will be done with their Alberta partner through the Internet. 3B are quite excited by this.

In Social Studies, we are learning about Vikings. We are currently doing measurement in Math. In Language Arts, each student is reading a historical fiction book and working on comprehension activities which are all on our blogs.

Check back later to learn how our plant projects are going.

Busy Bees in 3B

The bees have been buzzing in 3B. The students have been so busy learning and creating some amazing work and art. We had our artist in the school a few weeks ago and they made some awesome jewelry.

In Language Arts, we just finished up our persuasive writing unit. We blogged our pieces so be sure to check them out. Mr. Wamboldt and some grade 5 students came into help us turn our topics into movies using iMovies. The groups created excellent videos. I am hoping to get them onto kidblog soon. We are now starting a historical fiction reading and writing unit to connect with our upcoming Social Studies unit on Vikings. Be sure to ask your child how you can tell if a book or writing piece is historical fiction.

In Math, we just finished up with multiplication and division so check out our great multiplication videos on kidblog. We will be coming back to multiplication and division when doing problem solving. 3B just started our measurement unit with a look at using non-standard units for measuring things and are exploring calendars. We will soon learn about measuring length and perimeter. We will be creating a plant garden using this knowledge.

In Science we are finishing up our Forces That Attract or Repel unit before moving onto our Plants and Soil unit. This unit will be quite a fun experience as we will be studying plants and learning about them at the same time with a class in Alberta.

Be sure to check what we have been up to in 3B by exploring our kidblog and Twitter page.

Crazy Week

We had a crazy week with being locked in our classroom but, 3B was awesome and thankfully it didn't last long. A new door will be delivered on Monday. There was a lot of learning though. 3B learned how to write acrostic and cinquain poems. Mrs. McMahon-Muth came into start our unit on persuasive writing and then got locked in with us.  In math, we practiced place value and learned about ordering numbers from greatest to lowest. Next week, we will practice place value and work on skip counting. In science we learned about magnets and magnetic attraction.

Welcome to April

It is supposedly Spring now but, I am not so sure of that. April is going to be a busy month so we'll have lots to keep our minds off of the cold weather. We will be starting literature circles next week. The interesting thing is we will be doing them with another class all the way in Alberta. We'll be discuss our books with them through blogging and Skyping. Tomorrow, we will be starting a writing unit on persuasive writing connected to our mini-unit on The Lorax (in the middle of the month). In math, we are learning about numbers to 10000. In science, we have started exploring forces that attract or repel.

I'm Thumbody and the Bake Sale

Yesterday, was a busy day with our guest presenters from CMHA talking to us about mental health and then our bake sale. We learned a lot about mental health and their I'm Thumbody lesson. The students learned that we should Think, Act, and Feel. Our bake sale was a success as we raised $405 for the Thompson Homeless Shelter.

Winterfest Adventures and Other Cool Things in 3B

Hello,

We had a blast at Winterfest yesterday. We blogged away about it on our kidblog accounts. The wiener roast today was fun too! We are having fun blogging with other classes. This week we are reading and commenting on a class blog from New Zealand. 3B is having fun learning about other countries through our class buddies on Twitter. My sister made a guest appearance through Skype today to answer our questions about Australia. It was a hit!

Quiet Bloggers

3B was blogging so quietly that I thought it of the poem Twas the Night Before Christmas (and the quiet mouses etc) by Clement Clarke Moore and I decided to adapt his poem for our situation even though it isn't Christmas time. Way to go 3B bloggers.

Twas the Morning before Blogging-adapted from Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore:

Twas the the morning in 3B, when all through the classroom
Not a student was making a sound, not even a mouse.
The netbooks were going tap, tap on the desks,
In hopes that I (Ms. Bettess) would love their blogs like she always does.

The children were nestled all snug in their desks,
While visions of stories danced in their heads.
And me in my scarf,

Had just said thank you for your great blogs.

When out in the hallway there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
Away to the door I flew like a flash,
Tore open the door and threw up  my hands.

The sunlight from the hallway
Gave the lustre of the shiny students outside
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature group of kids, eight tiny fourth graders wanting to blog with 3B

With a little teacher, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be the grade 4s.
More rapid than eagles their teacher they came,
And the teacher whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Bob! now, Jon! now, Patty and Victoria!
On, Colet! On, Carla! on,on Donny and Blair!
To the hallway, to the gym!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

Adapted from Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore

Tech Exploration Time Continues in 3B-Tweeting!

On Thursday, we saw pictures that another teacher at school took while traveling. We viewed photos from Costa Rica, Italy, and Switzerland. The students back channeled so that they could use the information for their research projects. We learned from our librarian how to take jot notes so that helped us with making short back channeling messages.

On Friday, we looked at my sister's pictures on posterous.com. We, also, started connecting with our FaceTime book buddies through our class twitter account. This class account is run through my email and I will be the one writing our thoughts. I will share our tweets that we receive to the students. We are going to connect with a few classes from around the world to ask and get answers to our questions for our country research projects.

In math, we are moving onto numbers to 1000 now that we are adding and subtracting whizzes!

Skyping Adventure

Today, I introduced the students to using a back channel when interacting with others. We used a back channel to keep track off what we learned when Skyping with a class in Nebraska. A few students used wallwisher (an online sticky note site) to write down answers to questions we asked the other class. This allows for us to keep track of information we need for a research project. If you are a parent of a 3B student be sure to ask them about it. If you are a visitor please check out the following link for more information on back channels: Back Channel

We had fun Skyping with the other class in Nebraska. We learned that they like to eat walking tacos. We had to ask what they were and then we googled it to see an image. Be sure to ask your child what a walking taco is.

Our Digital Connections in 3B

Here is the link that shows all of the places we have connected with and how we connected.

Our Digital Connections Map

Oh My, Where Has the Time Gone?

I realized the other day that I haven't updated this in a month. January and February seem to be such crazy months. We just had a professional development day last week. I learned a lot about using Twitter in the classroom and I attend to start doing it more often. 3B is going to connect with a Grade 3/4 class in Fort Assinboina, Alberta using FaceTime and twitter. I, also, presented a session on blogging in the classroom. I showed a dozen or so teachers how to create their own kidblog accounts and showed off the amazing blogs 3B has done. The teachers at my session were quite impressed with our blogging talents in 3B-way to go 3B!

In other technology news, we have been connecting with other classrooms and people around the world as part of our country research in Social Studies. We have used linoit (online sticky note collaboration site), blogging, posterous (photo collection site), google maps, email, and photos in our quest so far. We have connected with classes in the USA, England, and Scotland. This week we will Skype with another class in the USA and my sister in Australia to learn more about these countries. We will, also, hear about places that another teacher on staff has visited. We are looking forward to seeing his photos and asking him questions. He better come prepared because 3B is a curious group! In the next few months, we will be reading the blogs of classes from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and Saudi Arabia. I have created a google map of our connections. Once I have figured out how to import the link into my blog I will add it here.

In Social Studies, we are doing a social action project with one of our grade 7 classes (7Y). The project is called Make Change based on Hannah Taylor's make change for educators program. Hannah is the founder of the Ladybug Foundation in Winnipeg which raises awareness and money for the homeless in Winnipeg and around the world. We will be starting our own combined Grade 3 and 7 blog about our project. The address will be sent out once it is up and running. The students will be using technology to bring awareness to the issue of homeless in Thompson. They are quite excited to start raising awareness.

That's all for now! Be sure to stay tuned for more adventures in 3B as I promise to update this once a week!

3B Cracking Out Some "Egg"-cellent Students

Since my last update the students have become addicted (in a good way) to these amazing math puzzles called ZUPELZ from Origo Math. These are number puzzles on cards where the students are given 4 or 6 numbers that must be into the blank squares and add up to certain numbers. Some of the students are breezing through these cards and will do them during at indoor recess. For any teachers out there, I highly recommend checking them out at this link: http://www.origostore.com/ZUPELZ-s/72.htm

For parents of 3B students: I have a 30 day trial to do these number  puzzles online. I will be sending you the information about how to access it. It is a great tool to help your child with their addition skills. Be sure to check it out with them.

I am sure some of you are wondering about the title of this blog post. We have been studying structures in Science and we learnt that eggs are strong structures. The students did an experiment where they placed textbooks to see if their egg would crack. The eggs survived the textbooks sitting on them. One student claimed "What an "egg"-cellent experiment.

As I mentioned last week we will be starting a reading bingo but, it won't go home till Monday as this week has been a bit crazy!

The students have been busy writing. We created some excellent "It is so cold that..." blogs today due to the freezing cold weather up here. Many of us (me included) wished for a warm vacation.

Next week, we will starting to explore different communities around the world using technology to communicate.

Parents-be sure to check for an email about the math puzzles soon.

Welcome Back!

I hope everybody had a great holiday. We are back to learning in 3B! Today, we welcomed a new student to our beehive! We are now full of 18 busy 3Bees! Today, we talked about New Years Resolutions and made some goals. We have started an art project using tissue paper and paper to create a snowman scene. Next week, we will be starting a READO (reading bingo). 3B parents; please look for this next Monday.
